American actress (1908–1942) who enjoyed great success as a popular screen comedienne in the 1930s and who became Mrs. Clark Gable in 1939. On January 16, 1942, the plane in which Lombard was traveling en route to a war bond rally crashed into Mount Potosi near Las Vegas, killing all 22 passengers. TLS, one page, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, November 15, 1934. Lombard writes to fan Jeanelia Kantner. In part: “Thank you so much for your little birthday card and all the good wishes you send me…. I wish I could write you a great, long letter, but of course you know how busy we are on ‘Rumba.’ Mr. [George] Raft and I do so many dances that I’m just about ‘tuckered’ out when it comes time to answer mail!…” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and a contemporary copy of a Paramount Pictures photo of Lombard.
