Description

Renowned American artist (1882–1945) and patriarch of a family of distinguished painters including son Andrew (born 1917) and grandson Jamie (born 1946). Best known for his illustrations for such classic literary works as Treasure Island, Last of the Mohicans, and Robinson Crusoe, N. C. Wyeth long sought recognition as a “serious” artist, drawing sharp distinctions between the worlds of commercial and fine art. The inclusion of his works in scores of distinguished museum collections provides, perhaps, the most compelling testimony to the realization of his goals. Signed book: Treasure Island (illustrated by N. C. Wyeth). Later printing. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1921. Hardcover, 7.25 x 9.5, 273 pages. Signed and inscribed in fountain pen on the half-title page, “Xmas greetings to John Myers [illegible], N. C. Wyeth, 1922.” In good condition, with soiling and light wear to covers (light crease to one corner), light toning, soiling, and scattered staining to interior (including signed page; mostly marginal), light edge wear to a few pages, owner’s bookplate and adhesive security label, and rear hinge cracked and slightly loose. The inscription and signature are clean, dark, and mostly unaffected. Wyeth is uncommon in signed copies of this, one of his best-known efforts. R&R COA.
