Description

STAMP ACT: FDR sends a philatelic letter to notorious Hollywood censor WILL HAYS

TLS signed “F.D.R.,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, November 3, 1944. FDR writes to Will H. Hays. In full: “My sincere thanks to you for that first day cover. I shall be greatly pleased to place it in my collection. Needless to say, I appreciate the generous compliment extended in your letter of October thirty-first. I share your pride in the record of your industry these past fifty years. It is indeed an inspiring chapter in the history of America.” The recipient (1879–1954), the former Postmaster General and then-president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, oversaw enforcement of the notorious “Production Code” that imposed strict censorship guidelines on all Hollywood films for decades. Though the Code had a chilling effect on artistic freedom, it inspired scores of resourceful directors and writers to exploit various loopholes and to creatively employ double entendres and similar under-the-radar references to forbidden subjects until the Code was abolished in favor of a ratings system in 1968. Mild handling wear and small paperclip rust stain to top margin, otherwise fine condition. A most notable association! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
