Perhaps the greatest player in the history of the game, George Herman “Babe” Ruth (1895–1948) was among the five charter inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ruth distinguished himself as the first player to hit more than 30, 40, and 50 home runs in one season, and his record of 60 home runs in the 1927 season remained unbroken for some 34 years. Original 1939 World’s Fair Employee Identification card, 4.5 x 2.75, originally issued to E. O’Keefe, a member of the fair’s Construction Department, signed on the reverse of the triplicate card in pencil, “Babe Ruth.” Accompanied by the original leather ID card holder and 40 individual admission tickets to the fair for October (all but one still attached). Ruth attended the World’s Fair as an instructor for the Academy of Baseball. While the fair attracted over 45 million visitors and generated roughly $48 million in revenue, the Fair Corporation had invested $67 million (in addition to nearly $100 million from private sources) and was forced to declare bankruptcy.
