American statesman (1801–1872) who served as secretary of state in the Lincoln administration and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. His greatest political achievement was the purchase of Alaska from Russia, derided by contemporary skeptics as “Seward’s Folly.” ALS, one page, 4.75 x 7.25, March 1, 1855. Seward writes to William L. F. Warren in Saratoga Springs. In full: “I regret very much that the edition of ‘Herndon’s Amazon’ is entirely exhausted so that I am obliged to disappoint you with very many other friends.” The book in question, Exploration of the Valley of the Amazon by Navy Commander William Lewis Herndon, was published as a two-volume set by the House of Representatives in 1854.
