Description

The man who became a meal British politician (1718–1792) who held a number of important positions, including First Lord of the Admiralty, Postmaster General, and Secretary of State. Sandwich earned a permanent place in the annals of etymology and cuisine by lending his name to the sandwich, an invention that reportedly allowed him to take nourishment without having to interrupt the marathon card games that were one of his favorite pastimes. Partly printed DS, signed “Sandwich,” one page, 12.75 x 11, February 16, 1732. An appointment for Thomas Lewes as master and commander of “His Majesty’s Fire-Ship the Pluto.” Countersigned by three others. A remnant of the wax seal remains at upper left; another paper and lead seal remains full intact. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, light scattered soiling, and slightly irregular ink adhesion. R&R COA.
