German rocket scientist (1912–1977) who emigrated to the United States following World War II and assumed an instrumental role in the development of the American space program. Original oil painting caricature of Werner von Braun, 17.5 x 22, done by noted Australian artist Tony Rafty. Composite caricature features a large image of von Braun in the center, surrounded by rocketships, satellites, stars, and an image of the artist flanked by a kangaroo and koala bear. Signed under his image in black ink, “Werner von Braun, January 12, 1962.” Rafty has caricatured politicians, sports people, and entertainers. He has sketched sportsmen and women at every Olympic Games from 1948 to 1996. His work has been exhibited worldwide and over 15,000 of his caricatures have been featured in newspapers and magazines.
