The memo line indicates that the check was for a “personal loan.” One of the inaugural members of Elvis’s notorious “Memphis Mafia” entourage, Smith was a cousin of the singer and was particularly close to him in the early years of his career. Though they had a falling out in 1962, they later reconciled, and Smith visited Elvis at Graceland on a number of occasions. Smith would later serve as a pallbearer at Elvis’s funeral.
