Description

Invoking “the Laws of England” in settling an estate

ADS, one page both sides, 7 x 4.75, no date [circa 1760s–early 1770s]. A legal document with a lengthy annotation in Adams’s hand. His contribution, in full: “As the case is stated there is no doubt, but by the Laws of England the Representative of the Eldest Brother, i.e. his oldest Son is instituted to the Estate. The Widow has her Dower, but after her Death, her Third will come to the same Person Nat. Goodwin, who is now instituted to the other two Thirds, provided there was no will to alter the course of the Descent….” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (touching text but not signature; a few short separations elsewhere), light wrinkling and soiling, and document affixed to Japan paper at two opposite edges of reverse (covering several words, not by Adams). Adams’s writing is clear, dark, and otherwise unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
