Partially printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13 x 16.5, March 5, 1817. President Monroe appoints Stewart a “Master Commandant in the Navy.” Signed at the conclusion by Monroe, and counter-signed by Secretary of the Navy Benjamin W. Crowninshield. Master commandant was a rank within the early United States Navy. The rank of master commandant was slightly higher than lieutenant, and a master commandant would often command warships too small to justify the command of a full captain. In the United States Navy, the rank was shortened to Commander in 1838. In very good condition, with handwritten text and Monroe’s signature several shades light but legible, a light shade of overall toning, and intersecting storage folds, with a couple of pinhole size separations. The white seal is crisp and intact. Presidential naval appointments are very desirable. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
