German field marshal (1891–1944) who earned the sobriquet “The Desert Fox” for his tactical genius as Commander of the Afrika Korps. In 1944 he was implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler; given the choice of suicide or a trial, he ended his own life with poison. Vintage sepia matte-finish 3.5 x 5.5 postcard photo, boldly signed in indelible pencil on the image “Rommel.” The lower margin bears a facsimile signature, while the reverse bears a preprinted sentiment noting that (translated) “Conditions in the African theatre unfortunately make it impossible for me to answer the innumerable letters which come to me from the homeland…. I ask therefore that you accept this card.” A hint of subtle soiling and silvering, and slightly indistinct contrast of signature against background, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
