An improvement to Franklin’s printing press

Manuscript DS, signed “James Monroe” as president and “John Quincy Adams” as vice president, three pages both sides on vellum, 12 x 15.25, May 11, 1821. A patent issued to Samuel Rust for “A New and Useful Improvement in the Printing Press, called the Franklin Press.” Countersigned by William Wirt as attorney general and by Rust (on the reverse of the first page). The paper and ribbon seal remains intact at lower left. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds (lightly touching signatures) and scattered soiling, wrinkling, and handling wear. Both signatures are particularly dark and clear. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
