“OUR TASK IS THE LIBERATION OF EUROPE”: A month before D-Day, IKE sends a stirring inspirational message to a British homefront campaign “in the name of Peace and Liberty”

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.25, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force letterhead, May 4, 1944. Ike writes to Maurice Prince at the Regal Cinema Offices in Barnstaple, Devonshire. In part: “Thank you for your letter asking me to send a message to the Barnstaple and District ‘Salute the Soldier’ week. I do so with pleasure. I hope the following will suit your purpose: ‘As Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force I take this opportunity to send greetings to the people of Barnstaple and District and to appeal to you on behalf of the Armed Forces. This war is reaching new heights of intensity against Nazi oppression which is now in its fifth year. Our task is the liberation of Europe. The Armed Forces of the United Nations must lack nothing in striking power to accomplish this. ‘You have the opportunity during ‘Salute the Soldier’ week of hitting the enemy another deadly blow by making this greatest success of all your campaigns. Never before has it been more vital that every one of us, whether in the Services or in civil life, should make his maximum effort in the name of Peace and Liberty. You have a fine target at which to aim. ‘I wish you every success in your endeavour...’” In very good condition, with light soiling and allover wrinkling, scattered light creases, and a few holes and tears to lower margin; the majority of the faults could easily be matted out for handsome display. The signature is clear and dark. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
