Benedict’s pontificate was dominated by World War I, which he termed “the suicide of Europe,” and its turbulent aftermath. Maintaining strict neutrality, he advanced several peace proposals and did much to aid war victims. In full (translated): “I thank you for your best wishes and I reciprocate with all my heart to you and your daughters. Next time you write to me, please send me more detailed information about your family, letting me know of any good changes. In memory of poor Tommaso, I am concerned about your family. God bless you….” Light intersecting folds, mild wrinkling and handling wear, and scattered faint staining, otherwise fine condition. The writing is dark and clear throughout. R&R COA.
