Description

British statesman (1900–1979), uncle of Prince Philip, and Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia who was killed by an IRA bomb. Three one page TLSs, all signed “Yours sincerely, Mountbatten of Burma,” dated between September and October 1962, on his Chief of the Defence Staff letterhead, all written to possible renters of his Classiebawn Castle. First letter reads, in part, “With this letter, I am sending you a small brochure ‘Notes on Classiebawn Castle’ which should give you most of the information you may be seeking. Ever since my wife’s death 2 1/2 years ago, I have been letting the Castle to help me out with the expense of running the Irish estate, and I am glad to say that so far the Castle has had a series of tenants, all of whom have gone out of their way to write and say how much they have enjoyed Classiebawn.” His final letter reads, in part, “I am very sad that you won’t be going to Classiebawn Castle this winter as I had felt you would be a marvelous tenant…However, it doesn’t make any difference, as the castle normally is in the hands of my steward and his wife, who will look after it through the winter.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes, the Classiebawn booklet mentioned in the first letter, a letter to the prospective tenant from Mountbatten’s real estate agent, and a 1957 TLS from the castle’s caretaker. In fine overall condition. R&R COA.
