Description

DEFINING MOMENT: Original page from the Guidance and Navigation Dictionary flown on the APOLLO 11 mission

Original printed page from the Lunar Module Guidance and Navigation Dictionary carried to the moon on the Apollo 11 mission, one page both sides, 5.25 x 7.75, signed in ballpoint, “Carried in Eagle to the Lunar Surface on Apollo XI, Buzz Aldrin.” Included with the lot is an undated TLS signed “Buzz Aldrin” explaining the purpose and provenance of the item. In part: “Accompanying this letter is a sheet labeled P30 LM Maneuver from the Apollo 11 LM G and N Dictionary.... The dictionary had several pages devoted to the procedures and use of the words printed in the left PURPOSE column. This sheet was a sample of the P30 data grids used in flight operations. The HR, MIN, SEC were the actual hour, minute, and second in mission lapsed time of the TIG (Time of Ignition) an a LM spacecraft engine burn. The delta VX, VY and VZ were the change in spacecraft velocity in feet per second in local vertical components. The HA was the predicted apogee and HP was the predicted perigee resulting from the burn, both in nautical miles. The delta VR was the total delta V required for the maneuver.... The complete dictionary was a vital document to the success of our mission. It not only provided definitions of computer codes, but contained detailed information on steps required to operate flight equipment associated with the first lunar landing. This actual sheet was an excellent quick view reference for myself and Neil Armstrong during the flight. It could have been used for flight operations if necessary. This sheet has been in my private collection since 1969....” Both items are matted and framed together (so that both sides of the dictionary page are visible) to an overall size of 20 x 16. In fine, clean condition. A superb and significant relic from this most avidly collected of space missions! R&R COA.
