ALS, one page, 6.5 x 8, March 24, 1862. Buchanan writes from Wheatland to his nephew, James Buchanan Henry (1833–1915). In full: “As there does not seem to be any prospect of purchasing New York Loan I would thank you to cancel my check dated 4 January for $10,175 & return it to me. Please to inform me the name of the cashier of the Chemical Bank. It has not, I believe, suspended specie payments nominally. Would my check on it command a premium over a check in any other bank? Yours affectionately….” Buchanan has “signed” an additional time as part of his nephew’s name in the footer. Intersecting folds (vertical fold to first name) and light handling wear, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
