ALS signed “U. S. Grant,” two pages, 4.75 x 7.75, August 23, 1883. Grant writes to “Dent” [probably a relative of his wife, the former Julia Dent]. In full: “Thank the proprietor of Orkney Springs for me for his kind invitation to Mrs. Grant and I to visit the springs as his guests. I supposed that I had put the Dr.’s letter in my pocket to answer from my office this morning. But I find I did not and cannot recall the name. Otherwise I should have written directly to him thanking him for his courtesy. We will not be able to accept however. On Thursday next I start for the Pacific Coast, over the North Pacific Road and will not return until too late to visit any summer resort.
