Description

1776: In the year he signed the Declaration of Independence, HANCOCK orders safe passage for a Continental Congressman and important supplier to the Army

Outstanding ADS, boldly signed “John Hancock, Prsidt.” [of the Continental Congress], one page, 8 x 10, September 16, 1776. In full: “To all Continental Officers, Guards & others whom it may concern: Permit the Honble. John Alsop Esqr. to Pass and Repass without hindrance or interruption. Given under my Hand at Philadelphia this Sixteenth Day of September 1776.” Alsop (1724–1794) was a prominent New York merchant who served as one of his state’s delegates to the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776. At the time of writing, Alsop, an ardent and active supporter of the Revolutionary cause, was traveling frequently between Philadelphia and New York City, functioning as an agent (through his own business) to procure supplies, particularly gunpowder, for the Continental Army. In addition to his role as a supplier, Alsop also made notable contributions both in the recruitment of troops and in his efforts to obtain housing for them. The document is partly affixed to slightly larger card. Accompanied by two 1993 TLS from noted autograph expert Charles Hamilton attesting to the item’s authenticity. Intersecting folds (horizontal fold, with tiny, easily restorable separations through signature, not affecting legibility in the least; a few partial separations elsewhere), very mild wrinkling and soiling, very subtle “ghosting” of text from folding of sheet, and light staining along left margin (not affecting any text), otherwise fine condition. Most of the faults are minor and are mentioned only for strictest accuracy befitting an item of such importance—for the exceptional large signature, overall handsome appearance, significant association, and all-important, coveted date of 1776 grant the present item the most exclusive cachet among documents from this most prominent of Signers! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
