Description

THIRD WING: WILBUR pays the man who built the engine for the WRIGHT BROTHERS’ historic 1903 flight

Bank check, 8.5 x 3.25, filled out and signed by Wilbur as “Wright Brothers,” adding his initials, “W. W.,” payable to Charles E. Taylor for $18.00, March 28, 1908. Taylor (1868–1956), who has endorsed on the reverse, played a seminal role in the history of aviation by building the engine for the plane on which the Wright Brothers made their historic flight in 1903. Taylor thereafter worked closely with the brothers in the improvement and refinement of their aircraft; he was also instrumental in assisting with the moving and reconstruction of the cycle shop where the first plane was built, from Dayton, Ohio to Henry Ford’s museum complex, Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, Michigan. Cut cancellation and staple holes away from signature, punch cancellation affecting a few letters of “Brothers,” and faint vertical folds, otherwise fine condition. A most historic association! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
