LIVE WIRE: BELL signs a check in the year of the first long-distance line

Scottish-born scientist and inventor (1847–1922) who conceived the telephone, founded the Bell Telephone Company, and invented various devices for aiding the deaf. Business check from Bell & Company, 7.75 x 2.5, filled out in another hand and signed by Bell, payable to H. L. Pelouze & Son for $12.00, December 1, 1884. Pelouze’s firm was a type foundry in Washington, D.C. Earlier in the same year, Bell’s company created the first long-distance line, between Boston and New York. Chip to upper left corner, faint vertical folds (one to middle name), clean cut cancellation (away from signature) and light toning from previous framing, otherwise fine condition.
