Description

AMERICAN DREAM: ADAMS grants a parcel of land to a Revolutionary War veteran

Partly printed DS as president, one page on vellum, 13 x 15, May 3, 1800. A grant for a parcel of land granted to Bennett Tompkins, heir of Christopher Tompkins, “a Subaltern for three years,” under the provisions of “An Act to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, to obtain titles to certain lands lying north-west of the River Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota….” Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as secretary of state. The reverse also bears an endorsement by James McHenry (1753–1816), signer of the Constitution and namesake of Fort McHenry, as secretary of war. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. Intersecting folds (vertical fold to “A” of signature; one small hole elsewhere) and some light scattered soiling at toning, mainly at edges and folds, otherwise fine condition. The signature is particularly bold and dark. An impressive example! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
