Description

American politician (1782–1852), much esteemed for his eloquence as an orator, who was a longtime member of Congress and Secretary of State under Harrison and Tyler. ALS signed “Danl. Webster,” 7.75 x 9.5, January 5, 1850. Webster writes to E. Rockwell Hoar. In part: “The necessity, which you set forth, of deciding, without longer delay, upon the request made to me to address the People of Concord on the 19th of April next, & the impossibility of foreseeing whether my engagements will permit me to perform that agreeable duty, compel me to decline it….” Accompanied by an antique portrait engraving. Intersecting folds (touching first letter of signature), scattered mild toning and faint spotting, mild handling wear (slight trimming to bottom margin), otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
