American politician (1782–1852), much esteemed for his eloquence as an orator, who was a longtime member of Congress and Secretary of State under Harrison and Tyler. ALS signed “Danl. Webster,” 7.75 x 9.5, January 5, 1850. Webster writes to E. Rockwell Hoar. In part: “The necessity, which you set forth, of deciding, without longer delay, upon the request made to me to address the People of Concord on the 19th of April next, & the impossibility of foreseeing whether my engagements will permit me to perform that agreeable duty, compel me to decline it….” Accompanied by an antique portrait engraving.
