Description

STEADY SUPPLY: Two weeks after Shiloh, LINCOLN appoints a quartermaster who would later serve at Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain

War-dated DS as president, one page on vellum, 13.75 x 17.5, April 18, 1862. An appoitment for John G. Farnsworth as assistant quartermaster of volunteers with the rank of captain. Farnsworth closed his business at the outbreak of the war, and, after his assignment in the Army of the Potomac, quickly worked his way up the ranks. After a year as chief quartermaster, Farnsworth was soon pressed into service to assist in inspections of the Federal forces, during which time he was with the Union Army at Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain, and Chattanooga. After serving as chief quartermaster of the Army of West Virginia, Farnsworth eventually retired with the rank of major general. Countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Intersecting folds (horizontal fold through Lincoln’s signature), and handwritten portions of document a shade or two light, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
