New Hampshire schoolteacher (1948–1986) who was the first teacher in space; she perished, along with all six other crew members, during the Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986. Color 8 x 10 NASA photo of the two Teachers in Space, signed and inscribed in blue felt tip “To Randy - Reach for the stars! S. Christa McAuliffe,” and signed in black felt tip by her back-up, “Barbara R. Morgan.” Morgan became a professional astronaut in January 1998, 12 years after McAuliffe’s death. Morgan flew on the space shuttle mission STS-118 aboard Endeavour (the orbiter that replaced Challenger) to the International Space Station on August 8, 2007, 21 years after the Challenger disaster.
