Three items: 1) TLS as president, on White House letterhead, June 30, 1952, sending thanks to Metropolitan Opera tenor James Melton following Margaret Truman’s appearance on Melton’s television show. In full: “Thanks very much for the kinescope copy of your performance on which Margaret appeared. She and I played it back Saturday night and enjoyed it as much as we did the first time.” 2) TLS signed “Margaret” [Truman], June 21, 1952, sending thanks to Melton for sending photos of the show, hoping to see the kinescope, and expressing her enjoyment at having appeared on the show. 3) TLS signed “Bess W. Truman,” July 8, 1954, sending thanks to Melton for writing to her husband [at a later date], and adding a handwritten postscript: “Margaret will be greatly interested in knowing her father has heard from you. B. W. T.” Margaret Truman’s infamous and ill-fated singing “career” provoked her father to write one of the most famous letters in the history of the presidency. In attacking a negative Washington Post review of a performance by Margaret, Truman threatened the critic, Paul Hume, that should they ever meet, Hume would “need a new nose, a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below!” Light scattered handling wear (staple holes to HST’s letter], otherwise fine condition.
