Description

“We do appreciate his interest and inventive genius”: In the midst of World War II, FDR gently lets down the inventor of an experimental tank

TLS signed “FDR,” one page, 8.25 x 10.25, White House letterhead, March 3, 1945. FDR writes to colorful Massachusetts congressman James F. Curley, striking out the typed heading and writing in “Jim.” In part: “The matter that you brought to my attention relative to the Bigley tank has been looked into by General Marshall. He reports that this vehicle has been tested by the Armored Vehicle Board, which was established at the direction of the Secretary of War…. This board was charged with determining which of the many armored vehicles built by or presented to the Army merited further consideration. Of the 15 experimental vehicles reviewed by this Board, 13, including the Bigley tank, were eliminated…. I am sorry that Mr. Bigley’s proposal has not been found suitable for Army purposes, but we do appreciate his interest and inventive genius in attempting to meet this particular war problem….” Light handling wear, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
