Honoring the memory of Wellington in the year of his own death: “The path of Duty was the way to Glory”

Distinguished British poet (1809–1892) who was one of the most highly regarded and influential literary figures of the Victorian era. AQS, a two-line extract from his Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington written horizontally on the 7 x 4.5 adjacent leaf of his personal Farringford, Isle of Wight letterhead, signed “Tennyson” and dated March 17, 1892. In full: “Not one or twice in our rough island’s story/The path of Duty was the way to Glory.” Light block of toning from previous framing, smudge to last letter of signature, and scattered faint spotting and soiling, otherwise fine condition.
