Description

ALS signed “Wellington,” one page, 6.25 x 12.5, August 7, 1834. Wellington writes to an unnamed gentleman. In part: “I have to apologize for having allowed so much time to elapse without sending an answer to your letter … regarding the claim of General … John Hamilton to receive a share of the 5th Class of the Peninsular Prize Money. My memory did not evoke me to recollect the facts…. But upon inquiry it appears to me that the General … was not present with the Army, and engaged in any of its operations in France between the 31st Dec. 1813, and 10th of April 1819; and that he is therefore not entitled to share in the 6th Payment as claimed by him….” Prize money was awarded to those serving in the Peninsular War during the Napoleonic Wars. General John Hamilton served under Wellington from 1810 to 1813. In good condition, with intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to “W”), a few tears, chips and small marginal losses, and scattered wrinkling and soiling. The signature is clear and generally unaffected. R&R COA.
