Description

Baltimore lawyer (1779–1843) who was inspired to write the “Star-Spangled Banner” after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British in 1814. Manuscript DS, signed “F. Key,” one page both sides, 8 x 4 (sight size; possibly a partial document), 1828. Key endorses a legal document that includes his name in the text. Patriotically matted with a 1908 certificate from the Francis Scott Key Memorial Association to an overall size of 19.5 x 19.75. In very good condition, with light show-through from text on reverse behind Key’s signature and scattered light toning, soiling, and handling wear. R&R COA.
