Description

Russian novelist. He was involved in strikes and imprisoned in 1905, he was an exile in Italy until 1914, then engaged in revolutionary propaganda for the new regime. He was the first president of the Soviet Writers’ Union, and a supporter of Stalinism. He died in mysterious circumstances, and may have been the victim of an anti-Soviet plot. TLS in Russian, signed “M. Gorki,” one page, 8.5 x 14, no date. Letter to L.F. Letvukov regarding traveling schools for ex-convicts. In part, “I am not an economist and perhaps because of that, floating schools appear to me to be an expensive exercise, not to mention that it is a huge and complicated deal and will consume a great deal of time for the organization. Therefore, the ex-prisoners, as a whole, will reject the educated life and will not follow through on the specific goals of reaching higher working qualifications.” Tape repairs to separations on reverse, light overall wrinkling, scattered edge wear, a few small areas of paper loss to edges and folds, and a light overall shade of toning, otherwise very good condition.
