For one glorious decade, 1945-55, Agganis was the finest athlete in New England. He is No. 27 on the Boston Globes list of the top 100 New England sports figures of the century. When he died in June 1955 of a pulmonary embolism, New England was staggered. He was 26. Red Sox baseball signed in ballpoint on a side panel by Agganis and also signed by twenty-three other members of the 1955 Red Sox, including: Mel Parnell, Skinny Brown, Ted Lepico, Jackie Jensen, Will Nixon, and Grady Hatton.
