Reproduction of the commemorative plaque left on the lunar surface by the crew of Apollo 11, on a cream sheet trimmed to 7.5 x 6, bearing the historic text, “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” The sheet as been boldly signed in black ink by Neil Armstrong, M[ichael] Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and Richard Nixon. According to the 2008 book We Came in Peace for All Mankind: The Untold Story of the Apollo 11 Silicon Disc by Tahir Rahman, the original plaque was made of stainless steel, measured 9 x 7 5/8 inches, and was bent to fit snugly on a metal strut. Though a member of President Nixon’s staff pushed for the inclusion of the words “under God,” NASA’s head of public affairs, Julian Sheer, originally objected on the grounds that members of certain religions might be offended. Though he ultimately agreed to the inclusion of the words, he did so knowing that it was too late to make the change, and that, “in the rush of events, no one would remember.” Trimming as noted and neat felt tip touch-ups to black border and globe images, otherwise fine condition.
