Kennedy and Javits send condolences to a soldier family: “Winston Churchill said, “Courage is rightly esteemed as the first of all human qualities because it is the one that guarantees all others.’”

Two items: TLS, signed “Robert F. Kennedy,” one page, 6.25 x 8, United States Senate letterhead, dated March 8, 1968. Letter of condolence to the parents of a soldier killed in action. In part, “Winston Churchill said, ‘Courage is rightly esteemed as the first of all human qualities because it is the one that guarantees all others.’ This courage Specialist Mork gave to all of us…Mrs. Kennedy joins me in expressing our deepest sympathy to your family.”; and a TLS, signed “Jacob K. Javits,” one page, 6.25 x 8, United States Senate letterhead, dated March 22, 1968. Letter from Congressman Javits to the same parents. In part, “It is with the deepest grief that I have learned of your son’s death in Vietnam…Your son gave his life in devotion to this country and to its ideals and there is no higher act of courage and meaning in pursuit of a just cause. It is my fervent hope and prayer that his death and the deaths of his comrades will somehow and sometime bring us closer to the day when wars are no more, when mankind is at peace, and when out of such sacrifices will come the better world for which your son gave him life.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes.
