Description

Prodigiously gifted German composer (1809–1847), who, during the course of a career that began in childhood, produced a remarkable body of work that occupies a place of central importance in the Romantic repertoire. His musical output represents virtually every form and genre of the era, ranging from piano and chamber music to symphonies and other orchestral music to such large-scale choral masterpieces as the oratorios Elijah and St. Paul. Manuscript DS, one page, 8.25 x 5, April 1838[?]. A receipt, in German, for services performed by a musician. In part (translated): “For the musical mass performed on the 20th of this month of April, I have received in good order 1 fl. 20 si. Total 1 fl. 20 si….” Mendelssohn signs at lower left “Certified, F. Mendelssohn B.” In very good condition, with central vertical fold, light wrinkling and creasing, a few small stains (mainly at edges) and slight blotting to a few letters of “Mendelssohn.” Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
