Considered the father of baseball, Cartwright and his fellow New York Knickerbocker Ball Club members devised the modern rules of the game. One page loan agreement, 8 x 6.25, dated April 15, 1880, written in another hand, endorsed in the left margin by Cartwright, “Mr. Paiko pays the Governt tax on the Real Estate, A. J. C.” Accompanied by two unsigned documents: the first is a preprinted receipt “Received from Alex. J. Cartwright," dated September 20, 1882, from Alexander Cartwright to Paiko for $200—filled in by Cartwright and signed by Paiko; the second, dated February 29, 1876, is an agreement between Paiko and another gentleman regarding the purchase of cattle, fully made out in Cartwright’s hand and signed by two others.
