“REMEMBER CIRCLES AND CONTINUATION”: LEE sends T’ai Chi guidance to his prize pupil

Legendary Chinese-American martial arts artist and actor (1940–1973) whose skill, charisma, and presence afforded martial arts films a new measure of respectability and popularity. Lee first came to widespread attention with his role as Kato on the television series The Green Hornet, which ran for a total of 26 episodes on ABC during 1966 and 1967. For most Americans, the show provided the first glimpse of Lee in (albeit TV-friendly) action; within the space of a few years, he would become a powerhouse film attraction. His untimely death “by misadventure” sparked all manner of speculation, including rumors of assassination, ancestral curses, and more—and would propel him into the realm of legend. ALS signed “Bruce,” one canary page, 8.5 x 11, no date (envelope with partial 1960s postmark). Lee writes to Taky Kimura, his top student and confidant, in Seattle. In full: “Just got back from Oakland to-day. (15 minutes ago, in fact!) Enclosed you will see a detailed easy to follow T’ai Kik [the Mandarin pronunciation of T’ai Chi, the “internal” Chinese martial art] form wall chart. Follow it and remember circles and continuation. Am rushing you to-day. If in doubt ask Sheldon. I doubt it though. Will write to-nite. Keep up the good work!” After signing, Lee adds a postscript: “Keep the chart in good form. I like it back [sic] when you’re through with it.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Lee’s hand. A touch of mild toning to right edge, some scattered wrinkles and light creases, otherwise fine condition. PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
