American naval officer (1794–1858) who took a leading role in the establishment of international trade with the formerly insular nation of Japan. Manuscript DS, signed “M. C. Perry,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10.5, July 1847. A statement of monies collected by the Customs House at Frontera [Tabasco, Mexico] during June and July 1847. On the final page, Perry signs his approval as “Com. of Home Squadron.” At the time of writing, Perry was in command of the American naval forces in the war against Mexico; in the previous month, Perry led the attack on Tabasco—the last Mexican port on the Gulf coast—that resulted in a pivotal American victory. In very good condition, with show-through of ink to body of text (not affecting signed page), a few creases (one to last name), and mild soiling and handling wear with a few wrinkles and tiny tears (small tape repairs).
