Description

Wheels for the famed horseman: “Have about decided to get a Hudson ... a most excellent looking machine”

ALS signed “George S. Patton, Jr.,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, Blackstone Hotel, Chicago letterhead, no date [envelope postmarked July 14, 1910]. Patton writes to Nita [his sister, Anne W. Patton]. In full: “I suppose B[eatrice, his wife] has told you that I broke one of the bones in my hand last week at monkey drill. I did it while riding four horses standing but don’t know just how it—it does not bother me the least. The tournament is a damned nuisance. Though the awards are huge. The camp is without doubt the dirtiest place I have ever been in—a towel used once is perfectly black and it is quite impossible to assimilate anything but dirt. B and I have been out to Sheridan twice and will I think move out Wednesday. It is quite strange to be having a house, but rather nice. This morning we have been looking at automobiles and have about decided to get a Hudson at $1175. A most excellent looking machine though rather slow I fear. I was going to get a Cadillack? [sic] but it is too expensive for a beginning besides the people made me mad so I will not have the D. think now. I have saved $2900 in the bank and so can afford what I want. It seems to me that I and Pa more [sic] than be said tell him to let me know. This hotel is awfully nice and cool even on the hottest days and it is cooling off now any way. Asside [sic] from my hand I am very well. Your devoted brother….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Patton’s hand. Intersecting mailing folds, light wrinkling, and small tear to bottom edge touching a few words, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
