Description

“I have some sick negroes & have the cholera morbus myself”

ALS signed “J. Field (and, a second time, “John Field”), one page both sides, 8 x 10, June 25, 1850. Field pens a letter on the integral leaf of a letter from Will Parkes to his brother, Thomas Parkes, in Franklin, Tennessee. Will Parkes’s letter notes that “Mr. Campbell he has a fever on him at this time, he is very unwell and I think scared some folks about his business being unsettled….” Field writes, in part: “Campbell is not so well. It is my belief he cannot get well…. If you have anything to settle you’re right to have it done right off…. John has a few negroes sick. I think at present that he should not live until he sees them better…. I should have come up but I have some sick negroes & have the cholera morbus my self. Joe is worse…. I got him to make a deed to the lot today…. [Gibson] has a high fever now & will about Thursday either be more rational & easy or will be far on his last journey….” Intersecting folds, a few light stains, and mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
