Description

Early ALS with franking signature

Early ALS, one page, 8 x 11.75, July 26, 1837. Fillmore, then a congressman, writes to James Dexter. In part: “Yesterday was the day agreed upon for making the appraisal of the Fairbanks land at Lewiston, and I attended personally and have just returned, and herewith enclose you the result in the shape of a contract with the appraisal of Judge Porter…. Fairbanks professed to be a good deal surprised at the result. I am inclined to think however that it is a fair appraisal. I tried to make Fairbanks agree in addition to your proposition to pay the costs but could not. The result of which is that each pays his own….” The reverse bears the address panel in Fillmore’s hand, including the franking signature “Free, M. Fillmore, M.C.” In very good to fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to first name; small holes at intersections), faint toning from previous framing, seal-related spot of skinning touching one word, light wrinkling, and subtle show-through of ink. Both signatures are dark, clear, and otherwise unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
