“THE BIOGRAPHY OF OUR FATHER”: LEE objects to “the modern way of spelling” during publication of a book on his illustrious father, HARRY “LIGHT HORSE” LEE

ALS signed “R. E. Lee,” one lightly lined page both sides, 5 x 8, July 15, 1869. Lee writes to his brother, Carter Lee, on problems with the publication of his father’s memoirs, then in press. In part: “Since my last letter I have rec’d from Richardson & Co. the proof sheets of almost one half of the biography of our father, with the assurance that the whole of the memoirs will be sent as rapidly through the press as possible. I have returned the proof corrected. I am sorry to say that there were many errors but I believe that is Common. He has also followed the modern way of spelling which I object to & requested particularly in sending on the manuscript should not be adopted. I have again called his attention to this matter....” Lee also reports that he plans to take his invalid wife to the Rockridge Baths as “she suffers more than usual during this heat.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, trivial tear to top edge, tiny pinhole to text, and light toning to left half of the reverse. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA
