Description

WAR IS OVER: Between the cessation of hostilities with the British and his farewell to his troops, WASHINGTON discharges a Revolutionary soldier

Partly printed DS, signed “Go: Washington,” one page, 8.25 x 13.25, June 8, 1783. A military discharge for Private Adam Harter of the First New York Regiment. Countersigned by John Trumbull and Major John Graham, who awards Harter the Badge of Merit for “six years faithful service.” On April 18 of the same year, Washington issued general orders announcing the “Cessation of Hostilities between the United States of America and the King of Great Britain”; the Treaty of Paris, which marked the formal conclusion of the war, was signed on September 3. Washington made his famous farewell to his troops and resigned his commission in the following December. In good condition, with intersecting folds (scattered holes and separations, reinforced and partly restored from reverse; vertical fold with slight separation to “ng” of signature), toning, staining (light stains slightly touching signature), and foxing. The signature is otherwise dark and clear. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
