Description

The man who changed the face (and voice) of opera

Important German composer (1813–1883) who, by expanding harmonic, instrumental, and dramatic forces to a previously undreamed-of degree, single-handedly revolutionized opera and attained status as one of the most influential geniuses in the history of music. Carte-de-visite photo, 2.25 x 4, signed in ink on the mount “Richard Wagner.” The reverse bears an early ink notation: “Rec’d. Sep. 15, 1893, from B. Seligsberg of Bayreuth—Wagner’s own collector of curious etc., who, in letter of same date, absolutely guarantees the authenticity of the autograph.” Accompanied by an ALS by Wagner in poor, largely illegible condition, with significant staining, fading, tears, text losses from skinning, and large patches of a glue-like substance to surface (including signature). Apart from light soiling, the photo is in fine, well-preserved condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
