American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. DS, one page, 15.75 x 9, March 9, 1799. An appointment for Andrew Graham to the position of Justice “to keep our peace in the said County of Orange.” Signed at the bottom in black ink by Jay. In fine condition, with several intersecting storage folds, small area of staining to bottom and top edges slightly affecting a few letters of text, and some light wrinkling.
