Description

Four signed items: TLS, signed with his left hand, “Basil Rathbone,” one page, dated November 20, 1947. Letter to a Pastor politely declining a speaking engagement. In part, “Unfortunately, this is the day on which I must make my 1947 book of recordings for Columbia Recordings. This is an eight hour session, starting at twelve noon.” Under his signature, Rathbone manages to write, “I have broken my right arm”; ALS, signed “Basil,” one page, dated December 25, 1958. Letter to his friend David. In part, “Things in the entertainment world are very slow & I am ‘lecturing’ to fill in - I go to Florida for 4 dates…Miss June Taylor & I are in the finals for the Arthur Murray Show! We shall dance together again…We really don’t stand much of a chance as the competition we are up against is terrific.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Rathbone’s hand; a DS, two pages, both sides, 8.5 x 11, Standard management contract between Rathbone and the William Morris Agency for the standard ten percent commission, signed on the reverse of the second page by Rathbone; and a program from the East Rochester Country Playhouse’s production of The Gioconda Smile, signed on the front cover in ballpoint by Rathbone, and three other actors from the production. Accompanied by a vintage glossy 7.25 x 9 photo of Rathbone as he appeared in The Czarina. In very good to fine condition, with scorch marks and punch holes to top of document pages, handling wear and a small tear to cover of program. R&R COA.
