Description

“Your old time army friend”: Barton sends warm greetings to a cherished colleague

TLS, signed in blue pencil, one page, 7.75 x 10.75, October 1, 1896. Barton writes to Dr. Martin J. Kittinger, a New York surgeon who served in the Civil War. In part: “Your letter … comes to me here to-day forwarded with half a hundred others, not one of which brings to me so warm a welcome or revives the memories as yours. I did go to the Thousand Islands for a week to accompany my Financial Secretary, Mr. Pullman and to meet and greet his father and invalid mother who were there. We … are here now, bringing up as well as we are able, something of a report of the work of the past months in Asia Minor. If the reporters made me require restoration of health it was their work and not mine. I am perfectly well, have been all the time and nothing but pressure of imposed duties from half the world give me anything to complain of. They work me pretty hard, Doctor, but for that how glad I should be for a week in which to slip away and sit down with you. I wonder if that will ever be…. Drop me a line sometimes, that I may know that you still cherish a thought of your old time army friend.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Intersecting folds (vertical fold between names of signature; small marginal edge separations) and mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
