Description

Writing as vice president on a four-legged “import”

American soldier and statesman (1821–1875) who served as a general in the Civil War and as the last Confederate Secretary of War. Previously, Breckinridge had served as vice president under Buchanan—at 36, Breckinridge was the youngest man ever to have held this office—and as a senator from Kentucky. LS, one page, 5 x 7.75, January 11, 1858. Breckinridge writes to Jason J. Fisher & Sons in Baltimore. In part: “I never held any interest in ‘a company formed for the purpose of importing Peruvian Llamas into the U.S.’—I hardly think they can be successfully introduced into our Western and southern States where other facilities for transportation are so numerous and so cheap, but believe they might be profitably employed in the mountain regions of New England and other Northern parts of our country….” Small blot to “B” and faint show-through from docket on reverse, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
