ALS signed “M. Van Buren,” three pages on two lightly-lined adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, June 25, 1857. Letter to a gentleman. In part, “Absence from home has prevented an earlier acknowledgement of the honor conferred upon me by the National Literary Society.” After the first paragraph, Van Buren’s handwriting becomes increasingly difficult to decipher. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through first initial of signature, light show-through from text on reverse, and a bit of scattered light soiling.
