In part, “My detention at Columbus was unavoidably longer than I anticipated, and I did not leave it until Friday morning last. I arrived here last night and found your favor of the 20th…. I shall leave here early on Wednesday morning for Dayton…. I shall leave it the next morning (Monday) with the intention of reaching Hamilton that night…. I retain the wish expressed to you that there should be as little parade conducted with my visit as possible. One of the greatest causes of my repugnance to public speaking is that publications in regard to it may follow. And as it is impossible for me to prepare or correct anything in the press, perversions or misrepresentations may be made….” The adjacent leaf bears the address panel in Clay’s hand.
